As the police reporter used to say at my first newspaper job in Springfield, Mo., the news angel has just dropped a few nuggets of gold on us this morning.
The Mariners have activated shortstop Jack Wilson from the disabled list and, to make room for him on the roster, optioned Matt Tuiasosopo to Class AAA Tacoma. In addition, the Mariners announced that pitcher Ian Snell, designated for assignment last week, has cleared waivers and they’ve outrighted him to Tacoma.
Manager Don Wakamatsu said Jack Wilson is here to play, but that he also doesn’t want Josh Wilson, his more-than-able replacement while he was out, to grow stale on the bench. Because Josh Wilson can play all four infield positions, he hopes to rotate him into the lineup. And, of course, Josh Wilson will be a valuable and versatile piece he can use off the bench.
As for Snell, he was designated for assignment Tuesday after allowing three hits and four runs in two innings of relief Monday against the Cardinals. He’s 0-5 with a 6.41 ERA this season. Snell accepted the assignment to Tacoma, where he was to report today.
