PASCO — Close but not quite.
That summarizes the feeling for the Jackson High School boys cross country team, which finished second in Class 4A today during the 2008 Washington State Cross Country Championships. Jackson came in ranked No. 1 but settled for the runner-up trophy behind champion Mead of Spokane.
Jackson lost by just six points, tallying 106. Mead scored 98 to win its second consecutive title.
Senior Ben Lance (18th place) and junior Mitchell Briggs (20th) were Jackson’s top finishers on the 3.1-mile course at Sun Willows Golf Course.
Jackson was trying to end Spokane-area teams’ grip on the big-school state title. Since 1988 Mead, University and Ferris have won all the big-school championships.
