Jackson captures share of Wesco South title

MILL CREEK – Jackson manufactured a reversal of fortune to claim a share of the Wesco South boys tennis dual-meet championship Friday at Jackson High School.

The Timberwolves (15-1), who lost 4-3 to Edmonds-Woodway on Sept. 22, picked up wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles – matches they lost in that earlier meet – to hand the Warriors (15-1) their first defeat, 4-3.

“That was a big key for us,” Jackson coach David Hutt said.

Jackson’s Richard Oam, who lost in three sets the first time he played Edmonds-Woodway’s Scott Sheldon, won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Teammate Alex Lin turned around his result vs. Willie Guo, winning 6-4, 6-4.

“We didn’t sweep the doubles like we did last time,” Hutt said, “but Alex Lin came through for us.”

Lin came back from a 3-0 deficit in the second set.

The last match to finish was the No. 3 doubles contest. Jackson’s Andrew Turner and Julio Rojas cemented the win with a 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 triumph.

“It’s exciting for the kids,” Hutt said. “We’ve been co-champs several times. We’ve never won the league by ourselves. We always share.”
