Jackson freshman has breakout day

EVERETT – While the track and field spotlight normally shines brightest on those who’ve been there before, every season it seems to find a surprise star.

Chanel Sam, welcome to the spotlight.

Sam, a highly talented Jackson High School freshman, was a four-event winner at Friday’s Everett School District Championships and paced the Timberwolves to a team title.

Sam started by winning the 100-meter run (13.21 seconds) and 200 (26.98). Both times tied Jackson school records.

“Especially as a freshman, she is so talented, humble and a pleasure to be around,” Jackson coach Steve Till said.

Sam also won the high jump (5-feet even) and long jump (16-2.5).

“She broke the (JHS) record in the high jump at the Bellevue Invite and the long jump last week at the freshman championships,” said Till.

That wasn’t the only Jackson record to fall Friday.

The 800 relay team of Kristi Kingma, Layne Jorgenson, Rachel Casel and Jessica Le set a school record with a winning time of 1:49.76.

Everett was led by Suzy Olsen, a double-winner in the 800 and 1,600.

“Suzy is a really strong athlete who steps up week after week,” said her coach Ned Prouse.

“Now, our goal is to get her ready for district and state.”

Samantha Taylor (400) and Elizabeth Melnikas (pole vault) both won for Cascade.
