The state-ranked Jackson boys basketball team is missing one of its best players.

Senior guard Ryan Todd suffered a concussion during Jackson’s Wesco South victory over Shorewood on Friday. Todd, a Seattle Pacific University recruit and one of the area’s best all-around players, “hit the ground pretty hard” in the Shorewood game, Jackson coach Steve Johnson said today in a voice message.

Todd, who averages about 15 points per game, missed Jackson’s game against Mariner on Tuesday and could miss more action.

“It’s unfortunate, but hopefully not a long-term deal,” said Johnson, adding that the team is in “wait-and-see mode.”

“There’s a (medical) protocol obviously to follow with (concussions). His health and welfare obviously is the first priority,” Johnson said. “We’re hoping next week (Todd will return to action) but we’re just going to wait and see how things progress.”

“Other kids have got to step up while he’s gone,” Johnson said.

Ranked No. 5 in the Tacoma News Tribune Class 4A state basketball rankings, Jackson is in first place in the Wesco South with a record of 12-1 (14-1 overall). The Timberwolves’ only loss this season was against South rival Meadowdale, ranked No. 10 in 3A.

Jackson plays at Shorecrest (9-4, 10-5) on Friday. Next week Jackson plays at Lynnwood (7-6, 7-8) and plays host to Meadowdale (10-3, 12-3).
