Jackson keeps share of lead

MILL CREEK – Jackson separated itself from co-leader Shorewood with a 4-3 Wesco South boys tennis victory Friday.

The Timberwolves improved to 7-1 in the division and overall, while Shorewood dropped to 6-2, 6-2. Jackson remained tied with Edmonds-Woodway for first place in the division standings. Shorewood is tied for third with Kamiak and Shorecrest.

After an evenly played first set won by Jackson’s Richard Oam 7-5, Shorewood’s Nomar Mapalo bounced back to take the final two sets of the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-4 to give the Thunderbirds an early edge.

“(The first singles match) was really good to watch,” Jackson coach David Hutt said. “It was a younger player against an older player and I think that’s the first set taken off Nomar this season.”

With the meet score tied at 3-3, the deciding match was No. 2 singles. Jackson’s Alex Lin battled back from a 5-7 first set to put away his opponent 6-1, 6-2.

Hutt also touted his No. 3 doubles team of sophomores Brian Bae and Kevin Luangrath. The duo rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first set to win 7-5 and take the second set 6-1.
