BELLINGHAM – Jackson broke open a tightly contested, 1-1 game with two goals in the final 15 minutes to beat Squalicum 3-1 in a Northwest District boys soccer playoff game Saturday at Civic Stadium.
The Timberwolves led 1-0 at the half on a goal by Sterling Flunder.
Squalicum then tied it in the second half and Jackson coach Mike Bartley feared that the momentum might swing the other way.
He didn’t need to worry. His players cranked up their game a notch and played with “tremendous effort,” Bartley said.
“We didn’t give up,” Bartley said. “We showed a lot of heart. That was the difference.”
With the score tied 1-1, first Dan Sparks scored and then Aaron Moore. Bartley said Jackson “didn’t have a lot of shots on goal” in the game, but made the most of the shots it did have.
After Jackson took back the lead, goalkeeper Matt Ditto and Jackson’s tenacious defense kept Squalicum at bay and made the 3-1 score stand up, Bartley said.
