Jackson sets up South title showdown with E-W

MILL CREEK — It was just business as usual Thursday for the Jackson boys tennis team.

No pressure, no hint that a piece of the league title was on the line.

Julio Rojas clinched the meet and a sweep of the singles matches with a straight-sets victory and the Timberwolves defeated Shorewood 4-3 in a Wesco South meet at Jackson High School.

Jackson (14-1 in league and overall) needed the victory to set up a title showdown today with Wesco South leader Edmonds-Woodway (15-0) in the season finale for both teams.

“No one said anything (about needing to win) — the kids knew where they were at,” Timberwolves coach David Hutt said. “They realized they had to win so (today) they have a shot at a piece of the title.”

The teams split the meet, with Jackson sweeping the singles matches and Shorewood (8-6) — aided by a couple of singles players getting ready for the district tournament — taking all the doubles.

“Shorewood had some pretty good doubles players. (Tristan) Reni and (Scott) McConnell normally play singles,” Hutt said. “The consistency of (Jackson’s) singles players was critical. They were all in control of their matches.”

The decisive match of the meet was No. 3 singles, where Rojas prevailed 6-2, 6-2 to seal the victory for the Timberwolves — and a shot at revenge as well as a share of the league title.

Edmonds-Woodway defeated Jackson 5-2 on Sept. 21 — the Timberwolves’ only loss this season.

Still, Hutt knows returning the favor by handing the Warriors their first loss won’t be easy.

“We’ve won a lot of matches (this season) 4-3,” he said. “Edmonds-Woodway has dominated, controlled the league.”
