Jackson showdown next for unbeaten Kamiak

SHOREWOOD – In a girls swimming battle between two unbeaten Western Conference South Division schools, Kamiak disposed of Shorewood 107 to 79 Tuesday at Shoreline pool.

A total of nine state qualifying times were set in the meet.

Kamiak’s Rikka Brunner swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.68 to qualify for state.

Brunner was a member of the 200 freestyle relay team that qualified for state and set a school record with a time of 1:22.42 as well.

In the 100 breaststroke, the top four swimmers set qualifying times. Ashley Best from Kamiak tapped the wall first at 1:09.72. Jackie Benson of Shorewood wasn’t far behind at 1:10.3. Jill Spencer and Brunner finished at 1:10.52 and 1:10.99, respectively, for the Knights.

“We put our top swimmers against their top swimmers,” Kamiak coach Chris Erickson said. “We were looking forward to the competition.”

Kamiak, which can do no worse than tie for first in the division, goes against second-place Jackson on Friday.

Shorecrest 124, Mariner 49: The Scots won all three relay races in the Wesco South meet. Patricia Ostrum won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events for Mariner.

Meadowdale 96, Edmonds-Woodway 87: Pool conditions were optimal in Lynwood, allowing three state qualifying times to be set. Maverick Shelby Hill set a state qualifying time in the 100-yard butterfly in the Wesco South victory. Hill, accompanied by Sarah Earling, Meredith Storey and Lauren Johnson, qualified in the 400 freestyle relay. Warrior Sarah Spillman qualified in the 200 freestyle.

Lakewood followed up with a second-half score and nearly tied the score a couple of times, but fell in its North Cascades game.

Lynnwood 3, Kamiak 2: At Kamiak H.S., Jenna Huston had 15 kills and 16 digs to lead Lynnwood (5-1 in league, 7-4 overall) to a 15-7, 15-8, 10-15, 3-15, 15-10 Wesco South win. Molly Hunsinger had 14 kills, Lyneve Bailey had seven kills and Tricia Bartlett had 38 assists for the Royals. Heather Hetzer led Kamiak (3-3, 5-5) with 25 kills. Heather Thomas had 18 digs and Kalee Martin had 30 assists for the Knights.

Meadowdale 3, Jackson 0: At Meadowdale H.S., Jackson’s Jaimie Crockett had eight kills, but it wasn’t enough to give her team the edge as Meadowdale won the Wesco South match, 15-6, 15-13, 15-6. The Mavericks’ Mira Dermendjieva had 43 assists, one ace and four kills. Teammate Lauren Marty had six aces and 11 kills and Jennie Swerk had eight kills and one ace. Both teams’ records are now 2-3 in league and 5-5 overall.

Mountlake Terrace 3, Everett 0: At Everett H.S., Eun Oh was 15-for-15 from the service line and Kelsey Voetmann had 12 kills as Mountlake Terrace (5-1 in league 8-3 overall) defeated Everett (3-3, 5-5), 15-4, 15-4, 15-13 in a Wesco South match.

Kamiak 6, Lynnwood 1: Kamiak’s Caitlyn Jordan and Shannon Skouras both scored two goals to lead the knights to a Wesco South victory. Jordan also had one assist and Melanie Bohnat, who scored one goal, was credited with an assist as well.

Edmonds-Woodway 3, Mariner 0: At Edmonds-Woodway H.S., the Warriors won the Wesco South match 15-2, 15-1, 15-6. Haley Shellhorn led Edmonds-Woodway (3-2 in division, 6-4 overall) with 20-for-20 serving including three aces. Nicole Maugga of Mariner (0-6, 1-8) had nine assists. Edmonds-Woodway set a team record with a .410 hitting average.

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Arlington 0: At Marysville-Pilchuck H.S., Morgan Zamora had six kills to lead Marysville-Pilchuck (5-0 in league, 10-0 overall) to the 15-6, 15-7, 15-7 Wesco North win over Arlington (0-5, 0-11). Micaela Parker had five kills and Mariko Coverdale had five blocks and three kills for M-P.

Stanwood 3, Lake Stevens 0: At Stanwood H.S., Katelin Parks had eight kills and Lauren Amundson had 13 assists as Stanwood (4-2 in division, 10-2 overall) defeated Lake Stevens (2-2, 3-7) in Wesco North Division action.

Cascade 3, Monroe 0: At Cascade H.S., Cascade defeated Monroe 15-3, 15-0, 15-9 in a Wesco North match. LuAnn Anderson and Danielle Selvidge had eight kills each for Cascade (3-1 in division, 7-2 overall). The Bearcats are 1-5, 1-11.

Snohomish 3, Oak Harbor 1: At Oak Harbor H.S., the Panthers (4-0 in league, 10-0 overall) lost the first game 12-15, but rebounded to win the next three with the help of Erin Stecher, who recorded 10 kills. For Oak Harbor (2-3, 5-6), Heidi McNeill had 10 kills, Alicia Lancaster had seven aces.

Mount Baker 3, Nooksack Valley 0: At Mount Baker H.S., Amanda Mars was 15-for-15 from the service stripe for Mount Baker (3-2 in league, 4-7 overall) in a mild North Cascades upset of Nooksack Valley (4-2, 9-3).

Lynden Christian 3, South Whidbey 0: At Lynden Christian H.S., the Lyncs (4-1 in league, 7-3 overall) won three straight North Cascades games 15-6, 15-13, 15-12 with the help of Kristin Dehaan, who had 32 assists and 13 digs. Tara Mouw had 14 kills and 20 digs. For South Whidbey (3-3, 7-5), Jenny Saephan earned six kills, seven digs. Lucy Daumen had five digs.

Coupeville 3, Concrete 0: At Coupeville H.S., Coupeville’s Sarah Mouw was 15-for-15 serving and had eight kills for Coupeville (7-0 in league, 8-1 overall), which defeated Concrete (0-7) 15-7, 15-1, 15-5 in the Northwest A League match. The win keeps the Wolves atop the league standings.

La Connor 3, Archbishop Murphy 2: At Archbishop Murphy H.S., the Wildcats lost games 8-15 and 9-15, then won two games 15-8, 15-11. But La Connor took the match with a 15-2 fifth-game win. For Archbishop Murphy, Molly Reynolds had five aces, 20 assists and 16 digs. Lauren Coate had 20 kills, 24 digs and seven blocks. Kristen Linscott had 14 kills, 27 digs and seven blocks. The Braves improved to 5-2 in league and 6-3 overall. Wildcats are 2-5, 2-8.

Cedar Park Christian 3, Kentview Christian 1: At Kentview Christian School, Stephanie Miksa had six kills and seven service aces as Cedar Park Christian (6-2 in league, 8-4 overall) picked up a Sea-Tac B League victory 15-3, 10-15, 15-3, 15-7.
