Jackson wins district

MOUNT VERNON – Jackson junior Dani Oster scored a goal in regulation and knocked in the game-winner in a shootout Thursday as the Timberwolves defeated Monroe 4-3 to win the District 1 girls soccer championship and earn the No. 1 seed into the Class 4A state playoffs.

“What a great ending,” Oster said. “We played hard the entire game and to win it is great. We came out and played our game.”

Oster picked up an assist in the first half after directing a near-perfect lead pass to Kaley Mitchell, who beat Monroe goalkeeper Kayla Wangner one-on-one to to tie the score 1-1 at halftime.

“Our big three, Dani, Kaley (Mitchell) and Kristi (Kingma) came up big,” Jackson coach Mike Bartley said. “They really controlled the ball well and provided great offense.”

Oster recorded her 18th goal of the season when she scored from point-blank range with 20:14 remaining in regulation to give Jackson a 3-2 lead.

“We ask them (Mitchell, Kingma, Oster) to step up and they did,” said Bartley, whose Timberwolves won their first district title in school history.

Monroe, which received a pair of goals from Brittany Chase, both penalty kicks, fell to 14-3-0 and will enter the state tournament as the district’s No. 2 seed.

“This was a great game, unfortunately it had to finish in a shootout,” Monroe coach Kathleen Potthast said. “It was a fun game to watch and coach.”

With 19:02 remaining, Chelsea Bumbaugh knocked a high shot over the outreaching hand of Jackson goalkeeper Dee Wood to tie the score 3-3.

Jackson scored on its first two shootout shots to take a 2-1 lead following a stop by Wood. The teams were tied after three players from each team had taken their shots. The Bearcats missed their next two shots and Jackson missed its fourth shot, but Oster, Jackson’s last shooter, drove a shot past Wangner for the victory.

“We answered each goal with a goal and that was the key tonight,” Bartley said.

Jackson has won eight of its last 10 games. Monroe lost for the just the first time in its past six games.

Snohomish 1, Mountlake Terrace 0: With three players missing with injury, including leading scorer Lacee Ross, the Panthers outlasted the Wesco South No. 4 seed Mountlake Hawks 1-0 in a loser-out District 1 playoff game Thursday night at Mount Vernon High School. The Panthers, winners of three straight including a 1-0 overtime victory against Lake Stevens earlier in the week, improved to 12-2-4 overall and earned the district’s third seed to state.

The Hawks, who finished the season 10-8-1 and won seven of their last nine games, defeated the North’s No. 3 seed Cascade and the South’s No. 2 seed Meadowdale before reaching the final four.

“It has been a crazy year,” said Pingrey, whose Panthers missed state last year for the first time in 10 years. “We have had five players out because of knee injuries this season, three are still missing. My lineup has changed almost nightly. But our freshmen have stepped in and have played well.”

After a hard-fought, physical first half – controlled mostly by the Panthers’ speedy forwards – Snohomish broke a 0-0 tie thanks to the head of freshman Kirstie Perron. Perron, who had settled near the right goalpost, headed in a crossing pass from senior Kelsey Manning to score the game’s lone goal in the 64th minute.

“I can’t even express how great my first varsity goal in a game this big,” said Perron, who found the net five times as a member of the Snohomish’s junior varsity squad.

“I’ve wanted to play varsity since I was little. It feels great to give something back to this team.”
