Jackson’s Kirton switches to track and wins in his first meet

EVERETT – Jackson’s Johnie Kirton, who will play football for the University of Washington in the fall, decided to switch from baseball to track this spring and in his first meet Thursday, Kirton won the shot put and was second in the discus in the Timberwolves’ Western Conference victory at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Kirton threw the shot 48 feet, 4.5 inches and tossed the discus 116-9, 16 inches shy of the mark of winner David Hancock of Shorewood.

Jackson’s Caleb Knox won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs for Jackson. Shorewood’s Anteus Wright won the 100 and the triple jump.

Everett 101, Edmonds 44, Arlington 32: Niko Sievers won the 110-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles and anchored the 1,600 relay as Everett won the Wesco track meet.

Arlington was hosting its first track meet in more than 15 years and with a new facility “came out to compete,” Everett coach Doug Hallsaid. “I’m happy for the Arlington team. They have a very nice facility that is going to help their team out.”

Everett got a surprise from Tadash Watson, who won the 100 and 200 dashes. Everett’s throwers took nine of 12 places overall.
