2001: Under the guidance of their fifth-year head coach, the Royals nearly won the 4A Western Conference South Division despite being one of only two 3A schools in the division.
Lynnwood (6-3 in the conference, 12-7 overall) lost its first Northwest District playoff match to Lynden, but rebounded with victories over Lynden, Ferndale and Sehome to qualify for state for only the second time in 21 years.
The Royals, who returned only two varsity players from the 2000 state playoff team, went 1-2 in state pool play. They lost to eventual state champion Seattle Prep, beat Holy Names and were defeated by third-place finisher West Valley (Yakima).
Background: Kellogg graduated from Evergreen High School (White Center), where she lettered in volleyball, gymnastics and track. Despite being only 5 feet, 7 inches, Kellogg was an All-Conference middle blocker for a Washington State team that won a regional title in 1978. She earned an education degree from WSU and later a science degree at the University of Washington.
Kellogg taught Physical Education and Health at Port Townsend while coaching volleyball from 1990-96. Port Townsend qualified for state in each of her last three season there. She currently teaches health, physical education and science at Lynnwood.
Comment: Kellogg said much of the team’s success came from the leadership of Sara Wike and Jenna Huston, who were responsible for the significant amount of off-season work done by the players.
“I have phenomenal captains,” Kellogg said. “I’d like to say I did it, but I have a captain (Wike), who doesn’t know when to quit. I’ve never had 16 kids show up and work out so faithfully. We played in a tough pool (at state), but I thought the kids represented themselves well.”
