Junior pitcher helps Marysville-Pilchuck notch division title

MARYSVILLE — Before his team’s biggest game of the season, Marysville-Pilchuck baseball coach Josh Rosenbach decided to use his not-so-secret weapon, junior pitcher Nick Haughian.

And when the Tommies held a supermodel-thin 2-1 lead heading into final inning, Rosenbach stuck with the arm that’s been on target all season.

Haughian struck out 12 in a three-hitter and Marysville-Pilchuck scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to hold off Lake Stevens 2-1 Tuesday in a Western Conference North Division game. With the victory, M-P (13-3 in league, 16-4 overall) clinched the Wesco North title, its first since 1985, according to Rosenbach.

Haughian (6-0) had a high pitch count after six innings, "so I was a little hesitant to send him out in the seventh inning," Rosenbach said. "He said he was fine, so I sent him out there. He came through for us when we needed him to."

Haughian retired the Vikings in order to end the game.

"When he gets the ball he’s ready to go," Rosenbach said of Haughian. "He’s been the top guy for us all year. Especially with so much on the line."

In the bottom of the sixth, Josh Short hit a one-out single and stole second base. Joe Newland singled and Donny Treat followed with another single to tie the score at 1-1. After a strikeout, Jared Neyens singled to right-center field with two outs to drive in pinch-runner Ehren Mull.

Treat made a running catch at the left-field wall to record the final out.

Short was 2-for-2 with a double for M-P.

Lake Stevens (11-5, 15-5) scored its run in the top of the sixth. Matt Fields walked with one out and stole second base. An error put runners at first and third and Brandon Crain hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

Matt Stevens struck out 12 for the Vikings, who won a tiebreaker drawing with Stanwood for second in the league.
