Kamiak edges Everett in 10 innings

EVERETT – Todd Matthews’ 10th-inning RBI triple broke a 2-2 tie and led Kamiak to a 3-2 victory over Everett Friday in a Western Conference South baseball game at Everett Memorial Stadium.

The Knights (10-3 league, 11-4 overall), who are one game behind first-place Edmonds-Woodway (11-2, 13-2), increased their lead over the third-place Seagulls (8-5, 8-7) by two games.

“This was a big game for us,” said Everett coach Ron Burdett, whose Seagulls lost for the first time in four outings. “We knew it would be a close game. But it was really more of a pitchers duel.”

Kamiak pitcher Brian Ouellette struck out 17 batters and surrendered three hits before being relieved in the eighth inning. Tyler Levin, who threw eight innings, struck out 12 for Everett.

“Tyler (Levin) did an incredible job for us because this is the first time he’s played in two weeks because of an injury,” Burdett said. “But Brian (Ouellette) dominated us. He did a great job throwing pitches past us.”

After giving up runs in the fourth and sixth innings, the Seagulls rallied back in their half of the sixth inning on a triple by T.J. Gaffney, which scored Alex O’Brien from second base. Gaffney scored two batters later on a hit by Braden Edwards to tie the score at 2-2.
