Kamiak girls win division swim title

EVERETT – Behind strong performances by Shayla VanGerpen and Rikka Brunner, the Kamiak girls swim team defeated Jackson 107-78 Friday night to lock up first place in the Western Conference South Division.

Despite losing two out of the three relay races, Kamiak’s depth proved too much for the Timberwolves, who dropped to third place in the Wesco South with a 6-2 league record. Kamiak remained undefeated at 8-0 in league and 9-0 overall.

Brunner, who won both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke, set a school record in the backstroke and posted state qualifying times in both races.

VanGerpen, on the other hand, won the 100 butterfly and finished second behind Brunner in the 200 individual medley, both in state qualifying times.

“It was a very competitive night,” said Kamiak coach Chris Erickson. “But in the end, our depth won it for us.”

Jackson’s Stephanie Aasland didn’t have too bad of a night in the loss. Aasland won both the 200 and 100 freestyle races, while swimming on both of Jackson’s victorious relay teams.
