Kamiak posts key South win

MUKILTEO – In what could turn out to be the meet to decide the girls swimming dual-meet championship in the Wesco South, Kamiak edged Jackson 96-83 Tuesday at the Kamiak pool.

Kamiak coach Chris Erickson said he expects another challenge down the road from Shorewood, but the Knights dealt Jackson its first loss.

“We wanted to win by more than the 10 points we got because they have no divers,” Erickson said.

Kamiak outscored Jackson by four points in the 100-yard breaststroke and backstroke events and finished second, third and fourth to negate a win by Amber Pleasant in the 100 freestyle.

Kathryn Niemi won the 100 butterfly and backstroke races in state meet qualifying times. She also swam on Kamiak’s winning 200 medley relay team. Teammate Taryn Van Gerpen also swam on the relay team and had a state qualifying time in winning the breaststroke. Laura Menard was on the relay and had a state qualifying time in finishing second in the 500 freestyle.

Pleasant also posted a state qualifying time in winning the 50 freestyle and swam on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. Teammate Marina Pomar-Enders was on the two freestyle relay teams and won the 500 freestyle in a state qualifying time. She also won the 200 freestyle.
