TUMWATER – The Kamiak High School football team took it right at Shelton on Saturday night. As a result, the Knights are headed to the state playoffs.
Austin Curran ran for 147 yards and Nate Hadley and Tony Virata each ran for two touchdowns as the Knights defeated the High Climbers 41-14 in a state-qualifying contest.
“I thought our offensive line played exceptional tonight,” Kamiak coach Dan Mack said. “Our kids had a terriffic week of practice and they came out and executed tonight. I was just extremely pleased with all three phases game: offense, defense and special teams.”
Kamiak (7-3) handed Shelton (9-1) its first loss of the season. The Knights play Meadowdale in the first round of state next weekend.
After falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter, the Knights scored 28 straight points to take control of the game. Hadley scored on runs of 2 and 1 yards, Curran scored on a 15-yard run and Virata scored on an 18-yard run.
“We have a saying that we just bite down,” Mack said about Kamiak’s response to Shelton’s early score. “The kids just focused and came out and performed like we know they can.”
Kamiak quarterback Mark Iddins was 8-for-18 for 169 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown strike to Taylor Knowles in the fourth quarter. Rebel Hall caught five passes for 74 yards.
