Kamiak sews up district playoff berth

EDMONDS – The Kamiak baseball team crossed one item of its to-do list Tuesday – the Knights clinched a 4A District 1 playoff berth with a 4-3 victory over Edmonds-Woodway – and set its sights on the next goal: securing the Wesco South’s second seed in the first round.

“Seems like its always Edmonds-Woodway, us and Mountlake Terrace going for playoff spots and seedings,” Kamiak head coach Steve Merkley said. “And Jackson, of course – they’ll get the top seed.”

The Knights (10-4 in division, 10-6 overall) are now tied with Edmonds-Woodway (10-4, 12-4), which had already clinched a district berth behind Jackson (14-0, 15-0). Earning the second seed would mean a home game in the first round of the district playoffs.

With the scored knotted at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning, Kamiak’s Josh Reed hit a two-out double to score Robbie Perrigo from first with the game-winning run.

“Reed hit one we thought was out,” Merkley said. “At Edmonds the left field wall is 30 feet high. He hit the top of it (and) it popped back in. … Perrigo was going with the crack of the bat.”

Kamiak starter Michael Payne threw 112 pitches and scattered 11 hits over seven innings to earn his fourth straight victory.

“(Payne) has a pretty good curve ball and he had that working,” Merkley said. “(Edmonds-Woodway) hit it hard but they hit it right at people.”

Andrew Hutt was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Warriors, and Zach Houvener doubled and scored twice.

The Knights play Mountlake Terrace today and Friday. Terrace, which was defeated 5-3 by Shorewood Tuesday, will clinch a district berth with its next victory.
