Kamiak swimmers set records

LYNNWOOD – Two Kamiak underclassmen and a relay team set school records Thursday as the Kamiak girls swim team beat Edmonds-Woodway 113-73 in a Western Conference South Division meet.

Freshman Rikka Brunner and sophomore Ashley Best posted school-record times in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 backstroke, respectively.

Brunner also swam a leg on the Knights’ record-setting 200 medley relay team, placed first in the 500 freestyle and then, to cap it all off, swam a leg on Kamiak’s winning 400 freestyle relay team.

Teammate Shala VanGerpen was twice victorious. VanGerpen won both the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly in Class 4A state meet qualifying times, while also contributing to the record-setting medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Kamiak’s Molly Fitzpatrick and Jill Spencer won the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, respectively.

Mountlake Terrace 125, Mariner 57: Sam Nick won two events and was on two winning relay teams to lead Mountlake Terrace to the Wesco South victory.

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Shorewood 1: At Marysville-Pilchuck H.S., Marysville-Pilchuck (4-0 overall) stayed perfect in pre-season play, downing Shorewood (2-2) 15-7, 15-5, 9-15, 15-11 in the non-league match. Ashley Doolen had 14 digs, 10 kills and was 14-for-15 from the service line for the Tommies.

Snohomish 3, Edmonds-Woodway 0: At Edmonds-Woodway H.S., Megan Silver had 10 kills and Annie Hots had 15 assists to lead Snohomish (4-0 overall) as the Panthers defeated Edmonds-Woodway (3-2) in straight sets, 15-9, 15-7, 15-5 in the non-league match. Haley Shellhorn had 11 digs and served 8-for-8 for Edmonds-Woodway.

Mountlake Terrace 3, South Whidbey 0: At Mountlake Terrace H.S., Eun Oh led Mountlake Terrace (3-2 overall) with 19 assists and 21-for-21 serving en route to the 15-7, 15-9, 15-7 non-conference victory. Teammate Kelsey Voetmann had 10 kills. Lauren Johnson had eight assists to lead South Whidbey (2-1).

Everett 3, Monroe 2: At Monroe H.S., Morgan Bagge had 18 kills for Everett (2-2 overall) in a 15-10, 15-9, 11-15, 12-15, 16-14 non-league match. Katie Habich, who dished out 21 assists and served 22-for-24, led Monroe (0-4). Teammate Taylor Thompson had 11 kills.

Kamiak 3, Arlington 0: At Arlington H.S., Kamiak struggled before handing the host Eagles a 16-14, 15-8, 15-13 non-league loss. Arlington’s Anglea Marino had 19 assists. The win evened Kamiak’s record at 2-2, while the Eagels are 0-5.

Shorecrest 3, Oak Harbor 1: At Shorecrest H.S., Kelly Herold had 25 assists for Shorecrest (3-1 overall) in a 10-15, 15-6, 15-1, 15-8 non-conference match. Valerie Hartman led Oak Harbor (2-3) with 21 assists.

Lynden Christen 3, Granite Falls 0: At Lynden Christian H.S., senior Tara Mouw had 17 kills in L-C’s three-game sweep. Lynden Christian (2-1 overall) won the non-league match 15-11, 15-8, 15-4. Granite Falls is 3-2.

University Prep 3, Archbishop Murphy 1: At Archbishop Murphy H.S., Callan Kosnik had 12 assists and five kills and teammate Lauren Coate pitched in with six kills and six blocks for Archbishop Murphy (0-3).

Lopez 3, Darrington 0: At Lopez H.S., Lopez (1-0, 1-0) opened its Northwest B League season with a 15-13, 16-14, 15-4 defeat of Darrington (1-1, 4-1). Lucy Tanner led Lopez serving 14-for-15 with two aces. Darrington’s Becky Nations was a perfect 11-for-11 from the service stripe and contributed 23 assists.
