Kamiak wins key Wesco South meet

MUKILTEO – With their Western Conference South meet tied 3-3, the outcome was in the hands of the No. 3 singles players for Kamiak and Edmonds-Woodway Friday.

Kamiak’s Edwin Lee came back from a one-set deficit to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

“It was a great battle,” Kamiak coach Vic Alinen said. “Guys were on the fence watching.”

After Lee lost the first set, Alinen had a small talk with the sophomore.

“I’m trying to instill a warrior spirit in them,” Alinen said. “I told him that he was going to war for us and he would set a precedent for this team as winners in this match.”

Lee responded by breaking serve once in each of the next two sets to come away with the victory.

Kamiak’s win sets up a key Wesco South showdown on Monday with Shorewood. The Knights (7-1 overall) host the Thunderbirds (8-0) in a battle for first place.

“I think it’s going to be a pretty squared-up match,” Alinen said. “The players know these meets are really important.”
