Kamiak wins state swim title

FEDERAL WAY — It’s a sports cliche, but there’s a reason it got that way.

The Kamiak boys swimming and diving team defined the phrase “team effort” on Saturday while capturing its second 4A state championship in the past three years by receiving points from 12 of 14 swimmers

.

Two years ago, the Knights rode the shoulders of five sprinters to relay wins and a state title.

Saturday was a different story at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way as Kamiak flooded the meet with swimmers and racked up 240.5 totals points, 18.5 more than its first title in 2009 (222 points).

“We were picking each other up and supporting each other all the way through,” Kamiak head coach Chris Erickson said. “We had some struggles, especially on the first day, but today everybody went as fast or faster than yesterday, it was a much better performance.

“We got the job done.”

The Knights, who have won four consecutive 4A District 1 titles and finished seventh at state last year, outpaced Todd Beamer (170.5), Richland (158) and Newport of Bellevue (138) for the title despite not having a single individual or relay team place first overall.

“We really pulled through today as a team and even though no one won, we won,” Kamiak sophomore Liam Sosinsky said.

A second-place finish by Sosinsky in the 100-yard breaststroke with an All-American Consideration time of 58.35 seconds was the Knights highest finish of the day.

Despite struggling a bit during Friday’s preliminary rounds, Kamiak’s swimmers got fired up prior to Saturday’s finals, thanks to a bit of senior-sparked encouragement.

Sosinsky said senior Matt Cramer implored the team to come out strong for the senior class.

“He used the quote, ‘There can only be one,’ and that’s what everyone has been saying the whole meet and that’s what got us pumped up,” Sosinsky said.

Coming in as the favorite to win the meet, Kamiak didn’t earn the kind of times it was looking for during the prelims, but come Saturday’s finals the Knights proved their depth.

“I don’t know if there was a little bit of an intimidation factor,” Erickson said of the prelims. “When you’re coming from the underdog position life’s a little easier. When everyone says you’re gonna win all year and then you’ve got to come and do it it’s a harder job.”

Stanwood’s Roe wins 200, 500-freestyle events

Matt Roe, a Spartans senior, earned his first two individual titles in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle events, but the University of Nevada Las Vegas recruit was disappointed with his finish in the 500 freestyle.

Roe won the 200 freestyle in 1:42.44 and the 500 in 4:37.78.

“I’m happy with my 200, but that 500 I just totally screwed up,” Roe said. “I was going for a 22 (4:22 state record-beating time), I don’t know what happened.”

Roe, who injured his deltoid muscle during the 4A District 1 meet, said the injury “wasn’t a factor” in falling short of breaking the state meet record of 4:23.06 set 16 years ago.

The goal was certainly ambitious of Roe, who took third in the 500 as a junior.

“I’m still happy (being a two-event champion), but I kind of wished there was a little more competition (in the 500) that might have pushed me some more, but it’s OK,” Roe said.

Stanwood placed fifth overall as a team with 128 points.

Harvey earns two titles, awarded Swimmer of the Meet honor

Snohomish senior Bryan Harvey closed the book on his senior season by defending his championship in the 100 butterfly and claiming the title in the 100 backstroke, in addition to being honored with the Swimmer of the Meet award for his efforts.

Harvey, who is favoring attending UNLV for swimming, but hasn’t officially decided, won the butterfly in an Automatic All-American time of 49.63 seconds. He won the same event last year in a time of 49.29.

“The times are not where I wanted them to be, but I won and I’m happy with that and it’s relieving,” Harvey said.

After placing second in the 100 backstroke in 2010, Harvey (51.94) held off Stadium sophomore Logan Rysemus (52.16) for the win.

“It’s kind of what I’ve been looking for for years and it feels good to finally get it, finally achieve it,” Harvey said of the Swimmer of the Meet award.
