Kamiak wins third-straight title

MUKILTEO — The Kamiak girls swimming team finished a third-straight undefeated regular season with a 108-77 Western Conference South Division victory over previously unbeaten Jackson on Thursday at the Kamiak High School pool.

"It was a lot closer than the score would indicate," said Kamiak coach Chris Erickson, whose team finished 8-0 in the division and 10-0 overall for the third straight year. "There were a lot of close races. There was a lot of anticipation for this meet."

The event featured 12 Class 4A state-meet qualifying times, including nine by the unbeaten Knights.

Kamiak junior Rikka Brunner won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 57.15 seconds, breaking the school record of 2002 team captain Shala VanGerpen. Brunner’s time of 53.70 in the 100 freestyle topped the state-meet qualifying time of second-place finisher Amber Pleasant of Jackson. Brunner was also a part of Kamiak’s state-qualifying 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Pleasant won the 50 free with a state-meet qualifying time of 25.31 seconds. The Timberwolves finished the regular season 7-1, 8-1.

Kamiak won nine of 11 events, including state times by senior Ashley Best in the 200 individual medley (2:10.63) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.92). She also swam on two winning relay teams.

"We are right on schedule," said Erickson, whose team finished fifth at the 2002 state meet. "We are looking to perform well at the district and state meets."
