Kamiak working hard on Feb. goals

LYNNWOOD — Depending on which side of the pool you were on, it was either a holiday hangover or the next step toward achieving a goal.

The Kamiak boys swim team put in some overtime with a morning practice Thursday before returning in the afternoon to defeat a short-handed Edmonds-Woodway team 125-45 in a Wesco South meet at Lynnwood City Pool.

“Our team is dedicated,” Knights head coach Chris Erickson said. “Twenty kids came in for an optional practice in the morning with a meet (later) … They’re working really hard.”

The Knights (2-0 in league, 5-0 overall) have their sights set on succeeding in the postseason and are preparing accordingly.

“Our focus is February,” Erickson said, referring to district and state swim meets. “They all know that. We want our best swims in February.”

Erickson singled out the performance of Greg Turner, who won the 500-yard freestyle Thursday with a time of five minutes, 33.66 seconds.

“That was a huge time drop for him,” Erickson said of Turner. “He couldn’t break six minutes three weeks ago, but with the training he’s been doing he did an outstanding job. It shows his conditioning.”

For the Warriors (2-1, 5-1), the bright spot was the 1-2-3 finish of Nate Stoll, Din Kuses and Thomas Ernst in the 50 freestyle.
