Kamiak’s Baik, Jackson’s Chamerski win 4A tennis titles

VANCOUVER — Kamiak’s Elaine Baik and Jackson’s Michael Chamerski each took home 4A state singles championships on Saturday.

Baik defeated Union’s Jelena Vidovic 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals to set up a rematch against with Stanwood’s Megan Lalone in the girls 4A finals. Lalone defeated Angela Chen of Newport 6-0, 7-6 (5) in the semifinals to reach the championship match.

Baik and Lalone meet in the district finals, with Baik claiming the title.

In the state title match, Baik once again came out on top, defeating Lalone in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Lalone finished as the runnerup for the second straight year.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Elaine and of our team,” Kamiak head coach Heidi Bloemker said of the Knights, who won the team title. “Her game was on. All of the hard work in the offseason and during the season paid off. She played smart and executed her shots. I really enjoyed having her on the team.”

Kamiak freshman Sally Park topped Leslie Ho of Central Valley 6-0, 6-4 and Katijene Stime of Mead 7-5, 6-1 to finish in fourth place.

Monroe’s Kendra Whitfield and Alyssa Drew finished fourth in doubles play, defeating Davis’ Meg and Erica DeMond 6-2, 6-3. in the fourth place match. Kamiak’s Alyssa and Jenna Gilbert of Kamiak won their first match, but were then defeated in their bid to place fifth.

Chamerski defeated Wenatchee’s Hudson Barnhart 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals before defeating Federal Way’s Mitch Stewart 6-4, 6-4, to take the boys 4A title.

“Michael had an exceptional season,” Jackson head coach David Hutt said. “This was an unfinished goal that he has always had and a goal he wanted to achieve. He played extremely well.”

Chamerski’s teammate Mitch Williamson defeated Alex Vogt of Bellarmine Prep 6-2, 6-2 to finish in fifth place, helping the Timberwolves win the boy’s team title.

3A girls

KENNEWICK — Meera Limaye of Shorecrest overcame a first set loss to defeat Stephanie Buckingham of Kennewick 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and finish in fifth place. Natalie Allen from Holy Names beat Sasha Carter of Bainbridge Island to win the championship.

3A boys

KENNEWICK — Meadowdale’s Alex Casper was defeated by Shuhei Matsuya of Seattle Prep 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, and finished in seventh place.

Reid deLaubenfelds from Nathan Hale defeated Jordan Smith of Mercer Island to take the state crown.

2A girls

SEATTLE — South Whidbey’s Hayley Newman lost her consolation match to Michelle Chiou of Hockinson 6-1, 6-1.

Tracy Landram of Kiahowya defeated Abigail Pellett of Ellensburg in the championship match.

2A boys

SEATTLE — South Whidbey’s Riley Newman beat Mallory Maloney of Sequim to finish in fourth place.

Luet Le from Interlake defeated Joe Kwiatkowski of Lindenberh to win the state title.
