EVERETT – Kamiak’s Travis Boyd and Kelsey Larson and Mariner’s Duran Hernandez and Ashley Burns were each winners of $1,000 college scholarships Wednesday at the Everett Golf and Country Club during the Dwayne Lane’s Scholar/Athlete luncheon for the Mukilteo School district.
The four winners, one boy and one girl from each of the district’s two high schools, were chosen from among 16 finalists by a committee consisting of district athletic director Jim Peters, one parent from each school and two representatives of Dwayne Lane Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Chevrolet.
Coaches at each school nominated candidates. Four boys and four girls representing each school were selected as finalists.
Candidates must have lettered in at least two sports, have achieved a 2.0 or better grade point average, intend to attend a two- or four-year college in the fall and have participated in some form of community service.
In addition to Boyd and Larson, Kamiak’s finalists were: Amy Galyan, Kelly Ronan, John Mack, Matt Zuvela, Josh Yasuda and Nicole Kellar. In addition to Hernandez and Burns, Mariner’s finalists were: Brandon Reed, Amanda Kerr, Chad Bonner, Jason Sampaga, Nicole Mauge and Regina Smith.
Hernandez, who played football and track in high school, said he’ll use his scholarship to study I.T. technical support at Bellevue Community College.
Burns, who played basketball and track, plans to major in business and be a part of the fledgling track program at Seattle University.
Boyd, who ran cross country and track and won the Western Conference championships in the 1,600- and 3,200 meter runs, plans to study business at the University of Washington and run cross country and indoor and outdoor track.
Larson, who played soccer and earned all-Wesco and All-Area honors in basketball, said she plans to attend Columbia Basin College in Pasco and study nursing.
Herald Woman of the Year in Sports Regan Scheiber was the guest speaker. Scheiber, a long-distance, open-water swimmer, told the graduating seniors that the positive qualities they’ve developed through their participation in sports will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
