RENTON — Defensive end Patrick Kerney is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left shoulder this week, Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said Monday.
The extent of the injury will not be known until doctors begin the procedure, so it is unknown when Kerney will return to the field.
“It can be something minor inhibiting his movement, in which he would miss a couple of weeks,” Holmgren said Monday. “If he re-tore his labrum, it’s the (rest of) the season.”
Kerney hurt his shoulder in a win over San Francisco eight days ago. It’s the same shoulder in which he underwent offseason surgery for a torn labrum.
Kerney spent the weekend in Alabama, where he visited Dr. James Andrews. Holmgren did not know exactly when the surgery would take place, but it could come as soon as Tuesday.
While Kerney is out, the Seahawks will probably use Darryl Tapp and Lawrence Jackson as starters. Holmgren admitted that the team could look for an available veteran. Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was cut by the Green Bay Packers over the weekend, while former Pro Bowler Simeon Rice has made it be known that he would like to return to the NFL if someone would give him a chance.
