Today is an important date for the Tips, though it may not seem so on the surface.
Today the Phoenix Coyotes play at St. Louis. If Peter Mueller suits up — and there’s no reason to think he won’t — it will be his ninth game with the Coyotes this season. One more and his NHL contract kicks in, and once that contract kicks in it’s extremely unlikely he’ll be coming back to Everett.
Now, the Tips never expected him to be back. All their preparations and roster decisions have been based on the assumption Mueller is gone for good. However, some reports on Mueller’s play with the Coyotes have implied that he may not yet be ready for the NHL, and if Phoenix decides he’s needs more seasoning, Everett is the only option as Mueller is just 19 years old and therefore ineligible to play in the minors.
So that makes the period between today and Phoenix’s next game, Friday at Dallas, crucial to determining Mueller’s ultimate fate this season. Stay tuned.
