Kicking game spurs King’s to triumph

SHORELINE – Timely defense, accurate kicking and a powerful rushing game was the winning recipe for the King’s Knights, as they defeated Lakewood 29-14 in a Cascade Conference clash Friday.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the first half as Spencer Clark scored on a 13-yard run for King’s and Lakewood quarterback Danny Borisov answered with a 4-yard scamper.

With Lakewood up 14-10 early in the second half, a 36-yard Andrew Lutton field goal closed the gap and energized the Knights.

“That field goal gave our kids momentum,” said King’s coach Jim Shapiro. “After a 60-yard drive, we were stalled and needed some points, Andrew came through.”

However, it was two defensive plays by King’s cornerback Chris Lehman that took the wind out of the Cougars’ sails. As Lakewood quarterback Brad Sears was galloping for a 60-yard run, Lehman made a TD-saving tackle to stop him at the 15. After a King’s punt, Lakewood was marching again. This time, Lehman stripped Sears and the Knights drove 60 yards for the go-ahead score.

Junior standout Spencer Clark was the Knights’ workhorse, rushing for 251 yards on 30 carries and three touchdowns.
