Kimberly Beard of King’s H.S. stands out at college events.

The Mukilteo resident looks for a strong finish at nationals this week.

Kimberly Beard, a junior at King’s High School and Mukilteo resident, performed well in two throwing events at college meets in recent weeks.

The state champion and All-American has thrown in two outdoor contests prior to heading to the Nike and New Balance Indoor Nationals, which begin today in New York and Boston, respectively.

Beard, whose forte is the hammer throw, competed in the Boitano Invitational at the University of Puget Sound against local collegians on Feb. 28. Throwing a training hammer of 5 kilograms, Beard threw 164 feet to best the athletes throwing the usual 4 kg hammers by 15 feet.

On March 7, Beard competed at the Beach Opener at California State University, Long Beach. Going up against the Japanese national champion and a mix of collegiate athletes from the California region, Beard posted a near personal best of 186 feet, 1 inch with the 4 kg hammer to place fifth. The mark is the early top prep distance and ranks her 20th in the world for the event on the U20 rankings list of World Athletics.

Though the hammer throw is not a sanctioned Washington Interscholastics Activities Association high school event in Washington, Beard plans to throw at the Eason Invitational in Snohomish on April 26.
