King’s beats Nooksack Valley

SHORELINE – On a wet, slippery field, the King’s football team pulled out a huge win, prevailing 21-6 over Nooksack Valley in a Class 1A District 1 preliminary round game at Woolsey Stadium.

The Knights continue in the 1A playoffs on Tuesday when they play Cascade Christian at Shoreline Stadium.

The game came down to who could hold on to the ball without letting it slip away.

“The real story of the game was turnovers,” King’s coach Jim Shapiro said.

Nooksack Valley fumbled the ball eight times and lost possession on half of them. On the other side of the ball, King’s (4-6 overall) fumbled three times, but only lost the ball once.

The wet conditions also led the Knights to rely more on their running game. Spencer Clark had 22 carries for 178 yards and all three King’s touchdowns. The Knight’s had two pass attempts in the entire game.

Shapiro also praised the defense for a spectacular “team effort.” Jake Lyon (8 tackles) and John Foote (6 tackles) led the King’s defense that limited Nooksack Valley (5-5) to six points. Nooksack Valley’s lone touchdown came on a 90-yard kickoff return by Nathan Gelwicks.
