King’s boys advance to 1A semis with 51-48 win over La Center

YAKIMA — King’s limited La Center to a season-low scoring output and converted clutch free throws in the final minute to earn a 51-48 1A state tournament quarterfinal win Thursday.

The Knights were led by Dawson’s Porcello’s 12 points. Josh Frohardt had 11, Chewy Zevenbergen added eight and Hunter Reeves scored seven points.

The win advances King’s to the state semifinals where it will face Freeman at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

King’s (22-5) led the entire second half, but La Center trimmed the lead to 46-45 with 22 seconds to play. The Knights made 5-of-6 free throws the rest of the way to hold on for the win.

King’s forced 17 turnovers, outrebounded La Center 33-24 and had 16 offensive rebounds compared to the Braves’ 1. That allowed the Knights to score 15 second-chance points, while La Center had none.

GIRLS

W.F. West 58, Archbishop Murphy 44

YAKIMA — Archbishop Murphy’s title hopes were dashed after falling to W.F. West in a 2A state quarterfinal on Thursday.

The Wildcats trailed 26-19 at halftime and were unable to make up any ground during the second half. The loss sends Archbishop Murphy (19-5) to a consolation game against White River at 2 p.m. Friday.

Republic 68, CPC-Mountlake Terrace 25

SPOKANE — CPC-Mountlake Terrace fell behind early to Republic and only three Lions players scored during a 1B quarterfinal loss Thursday.

Salome Yosef scored a team-high 15 points for CPC (22-4), and Jennifer Perekopskaya added eight in the loss that sends the Lions to a consolation game against Oakesdale at 10:15 a.m. Friday.
