MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – Even though the King’s boys basketball team secured a state playoff berth Wednesday, it didn’t mean that Friday’s game for third place in the Class A tri-district tournament wasn’t huge.
“This was a big game for us tonight, because the top three places from this tournament go to state as a number one seed,” said King’s coach Marv Morris. “And we’d much rather be a number one seed then a number two.”
The Knights received that coveted number one seed after defeating Cascade Christian 46-33 at Mountlake Terrace.
In a game that King’s controlled from start to finish, the Knights used a strong interior defense early to fluster Cascade Christian. King’s blocked three shots, including two by Jared Webb, and contested every Cascade Christian shot to jump out to a 12-8 first-quarter lead.
“Defensively we played together and to me that was the highlight of the game,” said Morris.
Cascade Christian drew to within three by halftime, but King’s, behind two quick baskets by Darren Trautmann, stretched the lead to eight three minutes into the second half.
Leading by nine entering the final period, King’s put Cascade Christian away for good with some strong shooting. Fueled by a 3-point goal and a layin by Chris Cayford King’s went on a 10-3 run to start the quarter and never looked back.
Chris Faidley finished with a game-high 12 points to lead the Knights.
