King’s Reese wins shot put; record set in girls pole vault

Associated Press

CHENEY – Tina Terry, from Valley Christian, broke the Class B pole vault record by 9 inches as four girls records fell Friday on the second day of the 2A/1A/B high school track and field championships at Eastern Washington University.

Terry, who finished second in the event last year with a vault of 8-feet, 9-inches, vaulted 10-3 Friday to break the previous record of 9-6 by Carly Gotiani of Kittitas set in 2000.

Defending girls state champion Valley Christian currently sits in fourth place.

Pullman’s Kate Hutchinson broke her own 2A discus record by more than 3.5 feet with a throw of 144-08.

Pullman, currently in sixth place, also is defending a girls state title.

Jessica Sines, from Freeman, set the A girls state championship pole vault record with a vault of 10-0 to surpass the record of 9-4 set by Becca Gillespy of King’s in 2000.

In the preliminary races, Riverside Christian set a girls B record in the 4 x 100 relay with a time of 49.65 seconds to beat the previous record of 50.2 seconds set by St. John-Endicott in 1991.

With a jump of 6-8, Brett Pflugrath, from Ritzville, defended his boys state B high jump title by bettering last year’s jump of 6-2.

The Broncos are leading the boys B team standings with 29.5 points.

Andy Collins, from Zillah, had his own 1-2-3 finish by winning the boys A discus, finishing second in the triple jump and winding up third in the high jump.

Other second-day team leaders included defending girls state A champions King’s with 41 points, with the next closest team being Oroville with 14 points.

King’s Julie Reese won the shot put and finished second in the javelin. The Knights’ Chira Louie and Allison West were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump.

In the 2A girls meet, Katy McGillen of South Whidbey took fourth in the long jump and Lakewood’s Ashley Kubin took sixth in the pole vault.

Elma was dominating the boys 2A teams with 22 points, leading Ephrata by eight points.

Only one point separated the boys A top two teams, with Zillah in first place with 30 points and Freeman next with 29.

Archbishop Murphy’s Jevon Butler was fourth in the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 42 feet, 4.5 inches.
