King’s wins five-game marathon

EVERETT – The King’s and Archbishop Murphy girls volleyball teams played a marathon five-setter Thursday evening at Archbishop Murphy, but it was Sarah Mosiman and the Knights who came away with the Cascade Conference victory.

“She’s an outstanding player,” Archbishop Murphy assistant coach Jim Hardy said of Mosiman. “She sees the court so well, she’s tough to stop.”

In the decisive fifth set, Mosiman’s play – and her jump-serve – proved to be the difference as King’s (2-0 in league, 2-0 overall) erased an early 5-2 Archbishop Murphy lead to go up 9-5 and then finish 15-11 for the victory.

Mosiman had five kills in the fifth set, but Hardy wasn’t keeping statistics on her.

“I’d run out of ink,” he said with a laugh.

For the record, Mosiman finished with 31 kills, including nine in the fourth set to help even the score at two sets each, three aces and 10 digs.

Archbishop Murphy (1-1, 2-1) and King’s fought a see-saw battle through the first four sets, with the Knights dropping the first set 19-25, winning the second 25-20, losing the third 19-25 and taking the fourth 25-18.

Archbishop Murphy focused on taking away King’s power game, but the Knights adjusted, switching to a finesse attack by shooting at the corners and probing for weaknesses.

“The game ran in streaks,” Hardy said. “One team would get hot, the other would respond. Back and forth, with lots of good net play.”
