Knights slip, slide to win over Meadowdale

LYNNWOOD — Kamiak coach Vic Alinen had to tell his team to “win one for the gipper” on a wet, rainy day in Wesco South tennis action Wednesday.

“We beat (Meadowdale) 7-0 the first time we played,” he said. “My guys were slipping and sliding a little bit so I had to give them the Knute Rockne (speech).”

Kevin Song and Michael Lunceford adhered to their coach’s mandate, winning the No. 2 doubles match 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 to give Kamiak the 4-3 win.

“It was really fun to watch,” Alinen added. “We were all there. Mark (Schneider, Meadowdale’s coach) said ‘I think it’s going to come down to the No. 2 doubles match,’ and it did. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

The tightly-played meet featured several come-from-behind victories for the Mavericks.

Jake Haight and Pat Donnelly of Meadowdale were down 5-2 in the first set and 4-1 in the second at No. 1 doubles before winning five in a row in each set to win 7-5, 6-4 over Kamiak’s Matt Patterson and Alex Zajac.

Meadowdale’s Scott Bohmke also had a comeback win over Abe Ahn at No. 2 singles, winning the second and third sets 6-2, 6-1 after dropping the first 0-6.

The teams split the singles matches, and Kamiak won No. 3 doubles to set up Song and Lunceford’s meet-clinching win.

Stanwood 5, Everett 0: At Everett, the weather did its best to hinder the Wesco North match, but Everett and Stanwood completed five matches to make it official.

Stanwood won the three singles and two doubles matches that were contested and was leading the remaining two matches when the skies opened up.

“(The rain) came down really hard and fast and the court got real wet,” Everett coach Tim Boyd said.

Stanwood’s Drew Kidd defeated David Truong at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-3, and fellow Spartan Kyle Klempel defeated Nick Yang by the same score at No. 3 singles.

The No. 1 singles match between Stanwood’s Kyle Koetje and Everett’s Andy Monro was suspended by rain with Koetje up 5-3 in the second set after winning the first 6-3.

The Spartans also had the No. 3 doubles match well in hand, with Kyle Luck and Zack Meyer leading Kevin Staley and John Huynh 6-0, 5-0 before the rain ended it.
