Jake Koppenberg of Everett shot a 1-over-par 71 Tuesday to advance to the match-play portion of the 2008 U.S. Amateur golf tournament at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.
After 36 holes of stroke play, Koppenberg was at 1-over par 141 to tie for 20th. The top 64 players in the 315-man field advanced to match play. The field will be cut to 32 today, eight on Thursday, and four on Friday, with the semifinals Saturday. The 36-hole final is Sunday.
Koppenberg, who plays for Western Washington University, shot an even-par 70 on Monday. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur by placing second at a sectional qualifier held at the Chamber’s Bay Golf Club near Tacoma. There he shot a 36-hole total of 2-under par 142, just one stroke off the lead.
