Lady Wolfpack first at Best of the West basketball tourney

The Snohomish County-based Lady Wolfpack eighth-grade basketball team won the Pacific Northwest Best in the West tournament over Mother’s Day weekend in Yakima.

The event drew teams from Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

The Lady Wolfpack posted a 5-0 record, including a 41-31 victory over the Spokane Stars in the championship game.

The team was coached by Rich Bruns and Gregg Kingma. Team members included Ashly Bruns, Kristi Kingma, Sara O’Neal, Ashley Todd, Jenna Herman, Ashley Knight, Eryn Jones and Shannon Wood.

Football

Walker chosen co-captain: Former Cascade High School standout Blake Walker was one of four players chosen as captains for the 2004 season by the Central Washington football coaching staff. Walker, a senior linebacker, was selected for the second consecutive year. Walker led the Wildcats in tackles with 81 last season.

Baseball

Sargent on all-league team: Former Oak Harbor star Joshua Sargent, a senior first baseman on the George Fox University baseball team, has been named to the All-Northwest Conference team for the second straight season. Sargent led the league in doubles with 14 and finished second in batting with a .408 average. He also was second in hits (62), third in RBI (45), fifth in on-base percentage (.465) and sixth in slugging percentage (.579).

Softball

Freshmen finish solid seasons: Chelsea Adams, a graduate of Cascade High School, started at shortstop this season for the Eastern Illinois University softball team. Adams, a freshman, finished second on the team in batting average (.278), home runs (four), runs batted in (17) and runs scored (19).

Meanwhile, Chelsea Logan of Mountlake Terrace recently completed her freshman season as a member of the Pacific University softball team. Logan, a catcher, helped lead the Boxers to their best record since 1998 (22-18). She started 32 of Pacific’s 40 games and hit .244. She had a fielding percentage of .988 and made just two errors the entire season.

Nealer honored: Former Jackson High School standout Amanda Nealer, a pitcher for Florida International University, has been named to the 2004 All-Sun Belt Conference Softball Team. Nealer was named to the first team for the second straight season. The left-hander was second in the conference in strikeouts (168) and third among regular starters in earned-run average (1.54). She has five shutouts this year and the junior is now second all-time at FIU with 11 in her career. She’s already the school’s career strikeout leader.
