Lake Stevens clamps down on M-P scorers in 61-54 win

LAKE STEVENS – The Lake Stevens boys basketball team’s swarming defense kept Marysville-Pilchuck’s best players from getting easy looks at the basket and that proved to be the difference Tuesday night as the Vikings captured a 61-54 Wesco North victory at the Lake Stevens gym.

The Tomahawks two D-1 recruits, Nathan Lozeau and Jared Stohl, had a hand in their faces on their shots or a body banging into them to contest every point made.

Stohl was limited to 14 hard-earned points while being defended by the Viking tandem of Zack Aker and Jimmy Bryant.

“What a fundamentally sound player. Jared is going to get his points,” Vikings coach Mark Hein said. “There were not too many shots that were not highly contested.”

Lozeau, the Tomahawks’ other go-to player, earned his 16 points while being guarded by the Lake Stevens tandem of Woody Pearson and Kelly Kurisu.

“I thought that those two guys did a great job of not letting him get to his spot on the block,” Hein said.

Offensively for the Vikings, Brett Dvorak scored a team-high 15 points all on 3-point field goals, including two in the fourth quarter. Jordan Carter had 13 points and Pearson finished with 10.

“We shared the ball pretty well and Brett was able to get some good looks for us tonight,” Hein said. “We were able to get a couple (defensive) stops and from there we were able to hit free throws to put it away.

The Vikings were 10-for-12 in the final quarter from the foul line while the Tomahawks struggled all game, hitting seven of 16.

Lozeau grabbed 11 rebounds and had four blocks for M-P. Nate Holthenrichs scored 13 points and Seam Moser added nine.

Shorecrest 70, Jackson 63: At Shoreline, Jamie Eisinger’s big second half – he scored 24 of his game-high 30 points in the final two quarters – wasn’t enough to lift Jackson over Shorecrest for the Wesco South victory. “We tried to stop him,” Scots head coach Brian Fischer said of Eisinger. “He had 10 points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth.”

Mark Golike scored a team-high 22 points and Yev Zuyev added 16 to help Shorecrest jump out to a 36-19 lead at the intermission. But the Eisinger-led Timberwolves cut the margin after the break. “They upped the tempo of the game,” Fischer said. “How we won was we were able to handle their pressure … to score off their press.”
