Lake Stevens edges Monroe 4-3

LAKE STEVENS — Krista Crosson is a control freak. Her teammates and coaches couldn’t be happier about it.

Lake Stevens pitcher Crosson walked none, struck out six and overcame a rare mid-game hiccup to lead the Vikings past Monroe 4-3 Wednesday in a Western Conference North Division fastpitch softball game.

Crosson helped first-place Lake Stevens improve to 9-1 in league, 13-1 overall by applying her usual pinpoint pitching control.

"That’s the key to Krista," Lake Stevens assistant coach Jason Bauer said. "She doesn’t walk anybody. She’s just an excellent pitcher. When she’s got her pitches working, she’s pretty tough. She doesn’t give any free passes."

Crosson, who improved her record to 13-1, has dominated most teams from the mound this season. But on Wednesday Monroe (6-6, 10-6) touched up Crosson for three runs on four hits in the third inning.

"She left some balls up a bit and the Monroe girls hit some good pitches," Bauer said. "But she battled through that and she made the pitches that she needed to."

In the bottom of the third inning, Whitney Cochran scored the winning run for Lake Stevens on a passed ball. Cochran walked to start the inning, advanced to second on an error and then stole third base.

In the first inning, Lake Stevens opened up a 3-0 lead. Catcher Sarah Froman provided the biggest hit, a one-out two-RBI single to right field.

"She’s our leader," Bauer said of Froman. "She drives the team. She’s solid behind the plate and she comes up with some big hits when we need them."

Leadoff hitter Allison Hall was 3-for-4 for Lake Stevens. All of Hall’s hits came on two-strike counts, Bauer said.

Brittany Rose was 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Bearcats.
