Lake Stevens’ Fields pitches gem

LAKE STEVENS – Matt Fields of Lake Stevens managed to hold Marysville-Pilchuck, the baseball team leading the Western Conference North Division, to just two hits in a complete-game shutout Monday.

Now 7-0, Fields struck out nine and allowed just two walks en route to the 10-0 victory for Lake Stevens (11-4 in league, 15-4 overall).

“I thought he was in control the whole time,” Lake Stevens coach Rodger Anderson said of Fields. “He’s gone three games without a walk before this and he wasn’t missing by much. His balls were just an inch or two low so he was barely missing, and that’s where we want his pitches to be.”

Junior teammate Ryan Verdugo provided the offense to back up Fields’ pitching with two home runs and five RBI.

Anderson can’t say whether or not some of Verdugo’s success can be attributed to a new bat or not, but since beginning to play with a sales representative’s new demo bat, Verdugo has hit three home runs and gone 6-for-15.

“(Verdugo’s) really stepped it up lately. He’s seeing the ball real well,” Anderson said.

Marysville-Pilchuck slipped to 12-3, 15-4, but still retains a one-game lead over Lake Stevens. The two teams play again at 4 p.m. today.
