Lake Stevens girls down Mount Tahoma

TACOMA — An early wakeup call didn’t seem to bother the Lake Stevens Vikings.

Playing in the opening game of the Class 4A state girls basketball tournament, the Vikings downed Mount Tahoma 67-43 Wednesday morning in the Tacoma Dome. The game tipped off at 9 a.m.

Lake Stevens (22-2) advances to a quarterfinal contest at 3:30 p.m. Thursday against Prairie, a 64-49 first-round winner over Inglemoor.

Alona Personius scored 23 points and Mary Ochiltree added 18 for Lake Stevens, which won its state opener for the first time in three years. Lake Stevens had lost to Mount Tahoma in the first round of the past two tournaments.

Brittany Tri led the Vikings with 12 rebounds and Leah Tate had a team-high seven assists. The Vikings put the game away early, outscoring Mount Tahoma 20-5 in the first quarter.

Mount Tahoma got a team-high 16 points and six rebounds from junior Carrie Ojeda. Senior Shauneice Samms, the team’s leading scorer, scored just four points and made just 1 of 7 shots from the floor. The Thunderbirds were just 14-of-73 from the field (19.2 percent) and hit just 2 of 28 3-pointers.
