Lake Stevens hands ‘Cats their 1st loss

OAK HARBOR – In a battle of two teams high atop the Wesco North standings, the Lake Stevens girls swim team handed Oak Harbor it’s first division loss of the season, defeating the Wildcats 120-56 at Vanderzicht Pool in Oak Harbor.

The score misrepresents how close the match was, according to Lake Stevens swim coach Sarah Summers. “There were a lot of close races,” she said.

The 100-meter butterfly was won by Oak Harbor (3-1 division, 4-3 overall) by a half second and the Lake Stevens 200 medley relay team came in only one-tenth of a second ahead of the Wildcats.

Summers mentioned the outstanding efforts of Sam Purnell and Kelly Conrad, who each won two individual events and participated on two winning relay teams to lead the Vikings (4-1, 6-1) to victory. The 200 freestyle relay quartet, which included Conrad, achieved a state qualifying time of 1 minute, 56.23 seconds.
