Lake Stevens pins seven in 66-12 victory

LAKE STEVENS – Even with its top wrestler sidelined with a rib injury, the Lake Stevens Vikings are tough to beat.

They proved that on Thursday with a decisive 66-12 victory over Monroe in a Western Conference North Division wrestling meet.

Burke Barnes may be back from a rib injury as early as next week’s meet against undefeated Cascade, but the 130-pounder was not needed Thursday.

The Vikings (2-0 in division, 2-0 overall) pinned seven of their 14 Monroe opponents to keep the Bearcats (0-3, 0-5) winless.

Freshmen Lester Brown (112 pounds) and Blake Tate (119) led the charge. Brown was won of three Vikings grapplers to win in less than a minute, while Tate pinned Monroe’s Austin Shepherd 1:03 into the second round.

“That was probably the highlight,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. “They did a great job.”

Monroe’s Zach Schumpert won a 6-3 decision over Cale Werner. Willie Ward (140) recorded the Bearcats’ lone pin.

Tyler Bannon filled in nicely for Barnes in the 130-pound class, pinning Charlie McKenzie with 41 seconds remaining in the third round.

Lakewood 56, Port Townsend 20: Lakewood’s Joe Edmonds pinned Duane Pederson from Port Townsend a minute into their 119-pound weight class match to lead the Cougars to a non-conference win.

103– Hoffman (L) dec. Allen, 7-3; 112– Gillis (L) pinned McCoy, 1:41; 119– Joe Edmonds (L) pinned Pederson, 1:00; 125-Wedekind (L) won by forfeit; 130-Johnson (PT) pinned Lengenfelder, 1:03; 135-Bailey (L) pinned Reandeau, 1:56; 140-Mohn (L) won by technical fall over Vanderven, 19-4; 145-Snyder (PT) pinned Bruns, :24; 152-Richardson (L) won by forfeit; 160-Smith (PT) dec.
