Lake Stevens places third in prestigious Tri-State wrestling tourney

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Lakes Stevens junior Kelly Kubec won his second title and teammate Kai VanLeuven won one of his own as the Vikings finished in a tie for third place in the 55-team Tri-State wrestling tournament at North Idaho College Saturday.

University of Spokane won the tournament with 152.5 points. The other Western Conference school at the tournament, the Monroe Bearcats, took 38th overall.

Kubec won the 130-pound championship, a year after winning the 112-pound title.

After pinning his first two opponents, and following that by winning two straight matches by major decisions, Kubec defeated Brent Parks of Hermiston, Ore., 8-6 in the final.

VanLeuven won his title at the 140-pound weight class. The senior stopped Lewis &Clark Anthony Varnell 3-1 in overtime.

Sam Ottow was the Bearcats’ top finisher, taking fifth in the 112-pound division.

Lynnwood Classic At Lynnwood, the Royals had four first-place finishers and took second overall in the Lynnwood Classic. Cody Mason (119 pounds), Jordan Williams (125), Josh Miller (130) and Tanner Detschman (145) all took first place in their respective weight divisions for the Royals. The big winner on the night was Blanchet, which finished first in the tournament and had five wrestlers win their weight class.

Cashmere Tournament: At Cashmere, the Sultan Turks had four wrestlers place in the top five of the 10-team Cashmere tournament. The Turks’ top finisher was 125 pound Jake Grohl who finished third with a 4-1 record. Josh Mann (140 pounds) and Nick Henrickson (160) both placed fourth in their respective divisions. Robbie Knowlton was fifth at 130 pounds.
