One year after placing third, Brad Dickson and Andrew McCrea of the Lake Stevens Rowing Club placed second in the men’s double sculls Sunday at the 2010 USRowing Youth National Championships at Harsha Lake outside Cincinnati.
“We’re climbing our way up the podium, one step at a time,” said Dickson, a 17-year-old junior at Lake Stevens High School.
Dickson and McCrea overcame a slow start to pass three boats between 500 and 1,500 meters of the 2,000-meter race.
“The race was pretty exciting,” Lake Stevens head coach Brian Wagner said. “(Dickson and McCrea) came from behind and were able to make a good run for first, but they came up a little short.”
The Lake Stevens rowers finished in 6:46.7. First place went to Graham Anderson and Max Meyerbosse from the Saugatuck (Conn.) Rowing Club in 6:44.3.
“In no way are we sad about getting second,” said the 16-year-old McCrea, also a junior at Lake Stevens High School. “This was an accomplishment for us. And we have another year to train a little bit harder and get those few seconds to win.”
“Being juniors, that really helps,” Wagner added. “They know they have another year to bring home the gold, and that’s the goal for next year.”
One other Lake Stevens boat with Michael Bresciano (Montessori Schools of Snohomish County) and Ryan Kessler (Marysville-Pilchuck) failed to advance through the qualifying heats in the men’s lightweight double.
The Everett Rowing Association took four boats and 23 rowers to Cincinnati. A fifth-place finish by the men’s lightweight eight (6:11.5) was Everett’s best showing. Marina Aquatic Center Junior Rowing Club of Los Angeles won the lightweight eight race in 5:56.6.
“It was tough racing out there, and we thought it would be,” said Patrick Secor, coach of Everett’s lightweight eight. “We had a good race, but we just weren’t the fastest team. We’re disappointed we didn’t do better, but we’re still proud of the position we took … and we’re walking away with our heads held high.”
Everett’s lightweight eight included Bobby Aikman (Lake Stevens), Tucker Keyes (Arlington, home-school), Mackenzie Baker (Kamiak), Cole Borseth (Archbishop Murphy), Nikita Cardenas (Everett), Martin Forde (Archbishop Murphy), Austin Overland (Kamiak), Rex Ryman (Archbishop Murphy) and coxswain Joe Stavig (Everett).
“It’s kind of disappointing not being first,” Aikman said, “but there were some big clubs here from across the nation. They were just faster than we were. … But we still made it to the grand final, and that’s no small feat.”
Everett’s men’s pair of Alex Engel and Philip Walczak (both Archbishop Murphy) placed sixth, rowing the course in 7:09.2. The winning time was 6:55.6 by the team from Saratoga Springs High School and the Saratoga Rowing Association of New York.
Everett’s men’s four placed second in the petite (consolation) final in 6:39.6. The team included Austin Bentley (Kamiak), Brandon Thul (Academy Northwest), Michael Tollefsen (Everett), Sam Helms (Snohomish) and coxswain Charles Forrest (Running Start/ Everett CC).
Everett’s women’s four placed sixth in the petite final in 7:39.6. The rowers were Natalie Harshman (Stanwood), Amy McKee (Jackson), Emily Osborne (Lakewood) and Brooke Rogers (Everett). The coxswain was Zayin Wall (Archbishop Murphy).
