SNOHOMISH – It’s been three years since the Lake Stevens girls track team has won a championship and Friday night at Snohomish Stadium the Vikings took it out on the rest of the Western Conference North Division with a runaway victory, compiling 252 team points.
“This feels good, these seniors were the last class to win a championship and they wanted to show the younger kids how to go out on top,” Lake Stevens coach Jeff Page said.
After Wednesday’s finals, Lake Stevens held a slim lead over Stanwood 43-41, with Snohomish (39 points) just four points off the pace in third after four events.
Jessica Hinton and Brandie Edwards helped change that slim lead by starting things off with convincing victories in the 100-meter dash and 100 hurdles respectively. Hinton picked up another 12 points in the 200, giving the Vikings 36 points after the first three events and providing Lake Stevens a commanding 79-41 lead over Stanwood after seven events.
The Vikings never looked back, placing first in seven events (84 points), but more impressively building their invincible lead with seven second-place finishes (70 points) and five third-place finishes (40 points).
“I’ve been here at Lake Stevens for 21 years and this championship is special,” Page said.
After 10 events, Lake Stevens had 138 points and after 14 events, 199.
Host Snohomish had three first-place finishers and finished third with 148 points.
Kaleigh Bishop won the 800 and Kendra Monroe won the long jump, helping Stanwood to a second-place finish with 164 points.
