Lake Stevens solidifies playoff position

MONROE – Lake Stevens distanced itself from the pack for a district playoff berth, opening up a two-game lead on the field for third place in the Western Conference North Division.

The Vikings used back-to-back doubles in the fifth inning to capture an 8-3 victory over the Monroe Bearcats on Wednesday. The third-place Vikings improved to 6-2 and took a two-game lead on fourth-place Cascade (5-4). Monroe is 4-4 and a half game back of the last playoff berth.

“It’s going to be a catfight for the last playoff spots,” Monroe coach Curt Eskeback said.

Lacie Nelson hit a bases-loaded, three-run double with two outs in the fifth inning to score the Vikings first three runs. Whitney Cochran followed with a double to score Nelson from third. Sarah Froman followed with a single to score Cochran to take a 5-0 lead.

Viking pitcher Kristi Leiter pitched five shutout innings, scattering four hits. Leiter also batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Gina Carbonatto was 2-for-3, scoring two runs, and had two stolen bases. Taryn Scott was 2-for-4 for the Vikings.

Michelle Young was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI for Monroe.

Cascade 12, Oak Harbor 1: Gloria Austin of Cascade was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle in the Wesco North game. Tiffany Thompson was 3-for-3, scoring three Bruin runs.
