Lake Stevens squeezes Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON – The game had everything that was expected between two teams battling for the division lead – tough defense, great pitching and a low-scoring outcome.

In a matchup of the top two teams in the Western Conference North Division, Lake Stevens defeated Mount Vernon 2-0 Monday. Krista Crosson threw a one-hit shutout to move Lake Stevens 1 1/2games ahead of Mount Vernon for the top spot in the league.

“She (Crosson) was on the mark today. All her pitches were working and as the game got on she got stronger,” said assistant coach Jason Bauer.

Crosson finished with seven strikeouts and allowed just two baserunners.

The only hit Crosson allowed was in the seventh; the runner was quickly erased by a double play.

The Vikings (8-1 in league, 12-1 overall) squeaked out the only two runs of the ballgame. In the fourth, Breanne Wise laid down a safety squeeze to score Kensley Balunsat for what turned out to be the winning run.

Lake Stevens got an insurance run in the seventh when Balunsat hit a bases-loaded single to drive in Taylor Cochran.

“It was a pretty solid game,” Bauer said. “A good battle the whole way. We got some key hits when we had runners on the bag.”

Mount Vernon (7-3, 10-3) had won nine of its last 10.
