Lake Stevens stops Stanwood

STANWOOD – Whitney Cochran hit a three-run home run in the first inning and pitcher Krista Crosson struck out seven batters to lead Lake Stevens past Stanwood 4-0 Monday in a Western Conference North Division softball showdown.

Lake Stevens (4-1 league, 8-1 overall), which remains in second place, knocked Stanwood (3-2, 5-3) into a tie for fourth with Marysville-Pilchuck (3-2, 4-3).

“We were tied with them (Lake Stevens) for second place when the game started,” Stanwood head coach Mike Chandler said. “So yes, this was a big game for us. Our bats have been inconsistent of late. We weren’t overwhelmed by their pitching, but we were not disciplined.

“She (Crosson) came in with a game plan and she stuck to it.”

The Vikings tagged on a fourth run in the sixth inning thanks in part to back-to-back walks. Cochran, who reached first base on a fielder’s choice and second on a single, advanced to third on a walk and then scored on a second walk.

“We had two outs on them (Lake Stevens) but we couldn’t get that third out,” Chandler said.

Kinsley Balunsat and teammate Allison Hall each had two singles for the Vikings.
