Lake Stevens tops M-P, creates first-place tie

MARYSVILLE – Playing to clinch a Wesco North title, Marysville-Pilchuck fell back into a tie with Lake Stevens atop the division, losing 3-1 to the Vikings in a Western Conference North fastpitch softball game Tuesday.

Krista Crosson earned the win for Lake Stevens after entering the game in the sixth inning.

Marysville-Pilchuck led until the sixth inning when Lake Stevens scored all it runs.

“Although we were up early, I knew we would need more runs to maintain the lead,” Marysville-Pilchuck coach KT Allyn said. “They put hits together, which is what you need to do to score runs.”

Gina Carbonatto, Lindsey Frietag and Lacie Nelson singled for Lake Stevens to lead off the top of the sixth. After Carbonatto scored on an error, Frietag and Nelson scored on a ground-rule double by Whitney Cochran.

Lake Stevens’ victory avenged the 2-1 loss to M-P in early April.

On Thursday, Marysville-Pilchuck faces Mount Vernon, a team the Tomahawks beat in extra innings in mid-April. The Bulldogs are still in the hunt for the division crown along with M-P, Lake Stevens and Cascade. The four teams will play off next week, if necessary, to decide the champion.

“All four teams in the running are playing very tough,” said Allyn. “We’re very evenly matched.”
